Shiatsu
Shiatsu means “finger pressure” and is a therapy originating from Japan. It is derived from oriental medical massage and uses the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It works in a similar way to acupuncture but without using needles.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine illness and pain is caused by an upset in the flow of Ki (energy) in the body. Ki can accumulate and become trapped in points along the organ channels/meridians and shiatsu focuses on clearing the blockages and tonifying weak areas so that the flow of Ki in the body can be normalised.

When you have a shiatsu treatment you will lie on a special futon mat, on the floor, fully clothed (unlike massage) and the therapist uses a combination of their fingers, thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees or feet along the energy meridians all over the body. It is a whole body treatment; however you can chose to have specific areas focused on.

Shiatsu can relieve symptoms, resolve conditions and raise your strength and vitality.

It is particularly beneficial for many complaints including general tension, stress related symptoms, neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, still or painful joints or muscles, headaches, nausea, fatigue, stress related insomnia and pre-menstrual related symptoms.

Shiatsu can be a very gentle, subtle treatment or a very strong treatment depending on your needs or desires. It does not need to be strong or cause pain to be effective.
