Drinking the recommended amount each day costs about $1000 for mineral water each year, or around $2 from the tap. No wonder the bottled water is an industry worth $544 million a year in Australia.

"In Australia, we have incredibly high-quality tap water," says planet ark founder Jon Dee, organiser of the bottled water alliance.
"and yet, more than a billion people around the world don't have access to safe drinking water. It's a sad indictment on our society that we're drinking half a billion dollars worth of bottled water every year in Australia."

Bottled water is a product we do not need, it's wasting resources and exacerbating climate change. The worldwide packaging for bottled water requires 2.7 million tonnes of plastic each year.

Bottled water generates up to 600 times more CO2 than tap water and Australia's annual use of bottled water generates more than 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

The department of climate change estimates that 200ml of oil is used to produce a 1-litre disposable bottle and approximately 70% of plastic drink bottles end up in landfill and take up to 1000 years to biodegrade.

Australians consume roughly 360 million litres of the stuff a year.
