Natremed Newsletter
July 2010
Dear [FIRSTNAME],
The majority of our patients talk to us about feeling tired and fatigued. There are many reasons why this may be so; too much work, inadequate nutrition from the food you ingest, sedentary lifestyle and poor sleep patterns. The fatigue may present as 3 O'clock-itis or you may wake feeling sluggish each morning. When we look closer it becomes evident that the fatigue is the result of nutritional deficiencies, toxicity, or a part of an existing health condition.
What-ever the reason for your fatigue, your diet can always be improved upon and for this reason we are now giving you the opportunity to improve the quality of your nutrition and diet with some practical, hands on food workshops. The cooking classes have been revamped to better reflect the needs of all our patients and include the use of SUPERFOODS in every one of them. Our aim is to make ‘every mouthful count’ and we hope that you will soon be enjoying the benefits of superfoods in every meal - just as we are!

Pearls of Wisdom
Think Globally, Eat Locally
We all know that our planet needs our help right now, but we often feel unsure about what to do, where to make an effort, and what will really help. The good news is that we can heal the planet on a daily basis simply by buying and eating food that is grown locally. Food that has been transported long distances doesn’t contain much life force by the time it gets to your kitchen. Making a commitment to shop, buy, and eat locally is not only a very important part of creating positive change, it can also be delicious fun.
One of the best places to begin the adventure of eating locally is a farmer’s market. Stalls brim with fresh fruits and vegetables grown on nearby farms. Not only is this good for the environment, it’s good for the farmers since they benefit from selling directly to the consumer. The consumer benefits, too, from the intimate experience of buying food from the hand of the person who grew it. In addition, the food is fresher and more diverse. In supermarkets, particular varieties of fruits and vegetables are favored due to their ability to survive transport to a far destination. Alternately, at a farmer’s market, you will find versions of the fruits and vegetables you know that will surprise and delight your senses—green striped heirloom tomatoes, purple cauliflower, white carrots, and edible flowers, just to name a few.
Make an effort to buy as much of your food as possible directly from local farmers. You will become one of a growing number of people eating delicious food to save the planet and having fun doing it.
Food of the Month
Food of the month - Quince
Okay, so it might not be the prettiest fruit going around, but don’t judge it by its appearance. The quince is somewhere between an apple and a pear, a bit furry with a few odd knobs, but tastes delicious!

Challenge of the Month
Challenge of the month - cut back on sugar!
If you keep a food diary for 3 days and write down EVERYTHING you eat, chances are you will be consuming around 26 tsp of sugar a day just like every other average Australian.
Don't believe me? Well let's take a look at some "foods" that are commonly found making their way into many shopping trolleys around this town.
- 375ml cola drinks: 10tsp sugar
- Tomato sauce (per serve): 1 tsp sugar
- White pasta (200g): equates to 150g sugar
- Ave breakfast cereal: up to 40% about 3tsp of sugar per serve
How could there possibly be that much sugar in these foods? Well, just
as those 26tsp crept up on you so sneakily, sugar is cunningly hiding
behind one of it’s secret identities: corn syrup, fructose, malt, corn
sweetener, dextrose, sucrose, fruit juice concentrate, lactose, maltol,
xylitol, dextrin, maltodextrin.
Our immune system can not function on sugar, nor can we sustain
energy or concetrate for long periods of time when we live off sugar.
So your challenge this month is to:
- Keep a food diary for 3 days and add up all the tsps of sugar (include white bread and pasta)
- Look up all the food in packets and jars and tins and determine which ones are too high in sugar
- Make a new food diary and for the next week try to halve your intake of sugar
- Continue this until the only sugar you are eating comes from fresh fruit and honey
- Reflect on how you feel now that sugar is no longer ruling your moods and energy!
